The surest way to do this is get five branded uruks to be his bodyguards and then command one betray him (if you're SUPER lucky you'll be able to manipulate things into having a warchief with a fear of betrayal). Definitely killing him with something/one other than yourself is super important: every time I killed the warchief myself I got an epic rune. Oddly no matter how long before killing him you do this, the game takes it into account when calculating rune level.
